Job Description: 

RESPONSIBILITIES/ BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION OF ACTIVITIES

Productivity (P):

 

  • Achieve shift-wise production targets as per the production plan.
  • Allocate manpower, machines and jobs effectively to maximize machine and operator utilization.
  • Monitor cycle time, machine utilization, OEE and productivity losses.
  • Minimize machine idle time, changeover time, waiting time and process interruptions.
  • Ensure availability of raw material, tools, fixtures, gauges and CNC programs before starting production.
  • Monitor and control bottlenecks and take timely corrective actions.
  • Coordinate with Production Planning, Tool Room, Maintenance, Quality and Stores for uninterrupted production.
  • Ensure proper shift handover with status of production, machines, quality issues and pending actions.

 

 

Quality (Q):

 

  • Ensure production is carried out as per approved drawings, process sheets, work instructions and control plans.
  • Ensure first-piece inspection and in-process inspection are completed as applicable.
  • Monitor rejection, rework, defects and process deviations and initiate corrective actions.
  • Ensure proper use and availability of measuring instruments, gauges and inspection equipment.
  • Stop production in case of major quality abnormalities and escalate to the concerned department.
  • Ensure traceability and identification of components, batches and WIP.
  • Support root-cause analysis and implementation of corrective/preventive actions.
  • Maintain quality discipline and ensure compliance with applicable QMS requirements.

 

 

Cost (C):

 

  • Control machining consumables, cutting tools, inserts, coolant and other shop-floor consumables.
  • Minimize tool breakage, scrap, rework, rejection and unnecessary consumption.
  • Monitor tool life and ensure optimum utilization of cutting tools.
  • Reduce machine downtime and avoid avoidable production losses.
  • Ensure economical utilization of electricity, compressed air, coolant and other resources.
  • Identify and implement cost-reduction/improvement opportunities.
  • Prevent damage to machines, tools, fixtures, gauges and components through proper handling.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Delivery (D):

 

 

  • Ensure achievement of shift-wise production and dispatch requirements as per plan.
  • Prioritize jobs based on production schedule, customer requirements and bottleneck status.
  • Monitor WIP and ensure timely movement of components between processes.
  • Coordinate with Planning, Stores, Quality, Maintenance and subsequent processes to meet delivery commitments.
  • Escalate potential delays, breakdowns, material shortages and quality issues immediately.
  • Ensure accurate production reporting at the end of each shift.

 

 

Safety (S):

 

  • Ensure compliance with all safety rules, PPE requirements, SOPs and safe operating practices.
  • Conduct/participate in shift safety briefings and toolbox talks.
  • Ensure machine guards, interlocks, emergency stops and safety devices are functional.
  • Prevent unsafe acts and unsafe conditions and take immediate corrective action.
  • Ensure safe handling of components, tools, lifting equipment, coolants and chemicals.
  • Report accidents, near misses and unsafe conditions immediately.
  • Ensure proper housekeeping and 5S in the machining area.
  • Do not permit operation of machines by unauthorized or untrained personnel.

 

Environment (E):

 

 

  • Ensure proper segregation and disposal of metal scrap, used coolant, oil, waste and other materials.
  • Prevent oil/coolant leakage and environmental contamination.
  • Promote reduction in coolant, lubricant, electricity, compressed air and other resource consumption.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental procedures and applicable statutory requirements.
  • Support initiatives for waste reduction, recycling and energy conservation.
  • Maintain clean and environmentally responsible shop-floor conditions.

  • Lead, guide and motivate shift operators and technicians.
  • Allocate work fairly based on skill, competency and production requirements.
  • Promote teamwork, discipline, ownership and continuous improvement.
  • Identify training and skill-development requirements of employees.

  • Authority to allocate manpower, machines and jobs within the assigned shift.
  • Authority to prioritize production activities based on the approved production plan.
  • Authority to stop a machine/process in case of safety risk or serious quality abnormality.
  • Authority to reject/hold components suspected of non-conformance and inform Quality.
  • Authority to request Maintenance support for machine breakdowns and abnormalities.
  • Authority to request tools, fixtures, gauges, materials and other production requirements.
  • Authority to recommend overtime, manpower deployment and shift adjustments based on production requirements.
  • Authority to initiate corrective actions for routine production, quality, safety and housekeeping issues.
  • Authority to escalate unresolved production, quality, maintenance, safety and manpower issues to the HOD.
  • No authority to alter approved drawings, process parameters, CNC programs or quality standards without authorization from the concerned function.

Qualification:

  • Diploma / ITI / B.E. / B.Tech. in Mechanical, Production, Manufacturing or equivalent.
  • Additional certification in CNC machining/manufacturing will be an advantage.

Experience:

  • Typically 5–10 years of relevant experience in machining/manufacturing, with supervisory or shift-handling experience.
  • Experience in CNC turning, VMC/HMC, machining centres, conventional machines and related machining processes as applicable.
  • Experience in production planning, manpower handling, quality control and shop-floor problem solving.

Desired Exposure / Technical Knowledge:

  • CNC machining processes and basic CNC programming knowledge.
  • Understanding of machining drawings, GD&T and process sheets.
  • Knowledge of cutting tools, inserts, tool life and cutting parameters.
  • Knowledge of measuring instruments such as Vernier, Micrometer, Bore Gauge, Height Gauge and related gauges.
  • Knowledge of OEE, productivity, cycle time, rejection, rework and downtime analysis.
  • Knowledge of 7 QC tools and basic Root Cause Analysis.
  • Knowledge of TPM, 5S, Kaizen, Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement.
  • Understanding of production planning and shop-floor control.
  • Knowledge of machine troubleshooting and coordination with Maintenance.
  • Knowledge of PPE, machine safety, LOTO and safe working practices.
  • Basic knowledge of ERP/MES/SAP or other production reporting systems.

  1. Achieve 100% of the planned shift production target as per the production schedule.
  2. Ensure timely completion of production orders as per the planned delivery schedule.
  3. Prioritize and complete urgent and critical jobs within the required timeline.
  4. Ensure smooth movement of WIP between processes without avoidable delays or shortages.
  5. Provide accurate shift-wise production status and timely handover of pending and priority jobs.
